How to act out a profession

A job is easiest to act out through its main tool and its typical movement. Swing a hammer for a builder, spray a hose for a firefighter, tilt an imaginary mirror for a dentist. Show who the job helps as well: a waiter balances plates, a pilot steers and checks gauges. For two-word jobs, like police officer or taxi driver, act out the first word and then the second, and let the group put the pieces together.

Why the hard level is hard

Hard jobs are mostly work that happens behind a desk, on stage or in someone's head. A philosopher, a notary, a stockbroker or an archivist do not have an action you can point to. Try to show the place and the result: a ventriloquist talks without moving their lips to a puppet, a conductor waves a baton at an orchestra, a lighthouse keeper scans the sea with a lamp. Let the guessers shout out guesses, and confirm only when they get the field right.

Play these jobs in the Showem app

The Showem app holds 200 occupation words in three difficulty levels, and this page shows 100 of them. Showem handles timers and team turns on a single phone, so the whole group can focus on acting. It is free to download on iOS and Android and the same word bank also includes animals, food, movies and more.
